95% of mobile users would use more data services if setup were easier
Press release:
Complexity is preventing uptake and usage of mobile applications and services, according to a survey of US and UK consumers commissioned by mobile device management (MDM) specialist Mformation. 95% of consumers surveyed indicated that they would be more likely to try new mobile services if setup was easier. Complex setup issues are also preventing 45% of people from upgrading to new, more sophisticated mobile phones. Moreover, 61% of these mobile users say phone setup is as frustrating as changing a bank account.
I have my doubts about the number cited in the headline. I know that transferring stuff from old phone to new is frustrating (and finding that favorite ringtone again) but locally 95% of the phones have correct data settings automatically. (With the 5% setup is then again virtually impossible). Still at my work and amongst my acquaintances only those who work with mobile services use data.
If setup counts finding out what services exist and in some cases accessing them, then the number is more valid. Its more about not knowing what to do with the data or not having a real desire for using a service involving data transfer. Blame in interviews can go easily on setup as the image is still a lot worse than the current situation (at least here).
